I agree Eugenia, a very interesting article. Sam Cook writes with authority and energetic passion. In one short column she connects Indigenous struggles globally, challenges what is “culture” and celebrates work that takes us into new spaces. I confess a fear of American influences – particularly around issues and impacts of hyper-sexualisation and the Living Large ethic, but I try not to let fear cloud my views entirely – Sam’s column helps in that.
Hey Sandra, I totally agree, I really struggle with those two things in Hip Hop as well – particularly the materialistic ideal of success and epic strive toward that success. Similar to you, Sam’s article reminds me of my own rationale, but one that can be hard to defend to others in the Indigenous Australian community.
