Control of Black Images

Jimblah (deadly Indigenous rapper) sent me a link to an interview he had given recently (linkage: http://hungrybeast.abc.net.au/stories/hip-hop-not-49) and it reminded me that there are blackfellas out there who still idolise gangsta rap and all that ish as what it means to be an Indigenous Australian.

This also reminds me that there a whole lot of racist folk out there who just dismiss gangsta rap, dismiss African American culture and dismiss Indigenous Australians who are in to it.  This too is wrong, because who controls the industry?  Who promotes these images of ‘successful’ black people (the gangsta rappers)?  Who sends those images around the world so that black folk across the world lap it up and don’t see any positive images of themselves reflected back, but only this export from America?

Just something to think about…
